Assembly elections were scheduled in Central Exoña on 24 July 2013, but were cancelled by President Luís Alvarado Castro citing electoral irregularities. The cancellation resulted in protests against his government, leading to his resignation and flight from the country on 22 August 2013. His successor, Fernando Cerén Aguilares, proclaimed that the results from the 2011 election would be retained until 2015.
